I’ve seen Morocco getting more popular on TV, whether it is the focus on a cooking program or as a challenge location on BBC’s The Apprentice. I’m pleased to see this, as I believe that the city of Marrakesh is one of the most magical places only a few hours from the UK. If you’re thinking about visiting soon, take note as I have a few tips on what you should do during your trip.
You may be tempted by the Atlas Mountains which you can see In the distance, but there is plenty to do in the city itself if you only have a couple of days to explore. Here are my Marrakesh top picks…
Take in Djemaa el Fna
This area has had an interesting recent history but is alive and well again after the UNESCO intervention. They call it “Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” which basically represents the traditions of the square and its culture. The bus station was moved out of the square in 2000, and now visitors can enjoy musicians and performers amongst the native smells, tastes and sounds. Here’s the best place to come if you want to see a snake charmer with your own eyes.
Shop in a souk
In series 4 of The Apprentice, the contestants were sent to Marrakesh to find ten items in the marketplace, and there are plenty of places to look. A souk is one of the best places to find traditional wares in Morocco as craftsmen will be at work performing their centuries-old skills. You’ll find the Dyer’ Souk, the Ironworkers’ Souk, the Carpet Souk and the Babouche (slipper) Souk. You can also look for more tourist-related products such as ceramics, blouses and silk carpets around the Medina (Old Town).
Head back to Djemaa el Fna
If you’ve been to the square during the daytime, you would’ve seen and heard plenty, but did you get a chance to taste some of Morocco’s amazing cuisine?
